When Measuring a Door
All Measurements should be taken in INCHES
- Note what kind of door you are looking to replace. For example
- Interior
- Single
- Double
- Interior
- Exterior
- Single
- Double
- Front Entry Door with Sidelights
- Patio Door
- Measure the inside portion of the rough opening from frame to frame.
- Measure the height of the rough opening from floor to the header.
- For exterior doors, note what the exterior of the structure is made from.
- If you cannot measure the rough opening
- Measure the width from outside of casing to outside of casing.
- Measure the height from the floor to the top of the casing.
- Then measure the width of the casing itself.
- Note the “Swing” of the door.
- Swing is defined as, when facing the door from the outside, what side the hinges are located.
- For interior doors the “outside” is where you would push open the door.
- Swing is defined as, when facing the door from the outside, what side the hinges are located.
Notes:
- Rough opening – opening of the hole that the door sits in that is covered by casing.
- Casing – the molding that surrounds the door.
