When Measuring a Door

All Measurements should be taken in INCHES

  • Note what kind of door you are looking to replace.  For example
    • Interior
      • Single
      • Double
  • Exterior
    • Single
    • Double
    • Front Entry Door with Sidelights
    • Patio Door
    • Measure the inside portion of the rough opening from frame to frame.
    • Measure the height of the rough opening from floor to the header.
    • For exterior doors, note what the exterior of the structure is made from.
    • If you cannot measure the rough opening
      • Measure the width from outside of casing to outside of casing.
      • Measure the height from the floor to the top of the casing.
      • Then measure the width of the casing itself.
      • Note the “Swing” of the door.
        • Swing is defined as, when facing the door from the outside, what side the hinges are located.
          • For interior doors the “outside” is where you would push open the door.

Notes:

  • Rough opening – opening of the hole that the door sits in that is covered by casing.
  • Casing – the molding that surrounds the door.
